Reaction: West Bromwich Albion 3 Blues 2

Garry Monk's comments following his side's narrow defeat to the Baggies...

Garry Monk on how hard the defeat was to take after taking the lead twice…
“It was very tough on the players tonight. We know it's a difficult place to come to because we're playing against one of the best squads in the league. In the changing room we think the performance tonight warranted points. It was a difficult one to take. Obviously conceding that equaliser straightaway in the second-half isn't the ideal start but I think we showed a great response to then take the lead again. Then their second goal it's a poor decision. I don't even need to see a replay because I saw it at the time. Connor (Mahoney) takes the ball. You can see by the way the ball went out as well because it should have been a corner to West Brom. It's another poor decision that's gone against us. The referee has guessed, and he's guessed against us and we've had a quite a few guesses go against us which is a shame. We have to live with that and deal with that. The third goal we could have maybe cleared it a little bit better. It kind of fell down off the head of Davo (David Davis). It was a fantastic strike from West Brom's point of view, but that can happen. The fact that we limited them to only three shots on our goal shows the level of performance we gave tonight.”

Asked if the performance gave him heart moving forwards…
“For sure. I said to the players at the end we had a lot of fight and passion and we had quality as well. I remember saying that to the players in the position that we were in last season. If they continue to do those things and show that fight and spirit, we'll get to where we need to get to, and we have full belief in that. We stick together. You can see in the last couple of games how much we've been trying to give our fans those points. What we'll do is what we always do we'll stick together, the club, the players, the staff and the fans and we'll get to where we need to get to.”

On Lukas Jutkiewicz being rewarded with a goal for his hard work…
“I've said all season long Jukey has been fantastic. He's contributed with goals and his all-round performance with what he allows other players to do on the pitch with him on the pitch, he's been fantastic and he's a really important player for us moving forwards into these last games. It's a very tough one for the players tonight and it's been like that for the last couple of games. We've put a performance in that's warranted quite a few more points than having none. But it's about moving forwards. People will talk about five games in a row but everyone that has watched us will see it's not a true reflection of what we've given in those performances.”

On how important it was for Blues to get points in their next game against Leeds United...
“It's important in every single game to get points but you can only try as hard as you can and give everything you've got. Those players have given everything they've got and shown quality and organisation against a very good side and we've been very unfortunate with a few things that have gone against us tonight and we need things to go for us and hopefully we will get those in the next games. But we trust in ourselves. We've had adversity all season long and just because there's a bit more adversity it won't change our thinking.”

On Maikel Kieftenbeld’s absence...
“Kiefer just came down with a bit of illness yesterday in training. His breathing was just a little bit restricted and that had to rule him out of the game tonight. But he should be alright for next week."

Asked if he thought things were going a little bit against Blues...
“Yes, it does feel that. But the mentality the squad have had this season and the mentality we've tried to put into the squad this season is that adversity will come your way at some point at certain points. Sometimes it's greater than other teams. We seem to have faced a lot of adversity this season, but our attitude has been to meet it head on and I think you can see from the performance in the last couple of games that we've been trying to show our best attitude possible and quality. It was a tough result but if we continue to do those things, we know that results will turn for us for sure.”
