Maikel Kieftenbeld departs

The 30-year-old joins the Lions on a permanent basis.

Blues can confirm that Maikel Kieftenbeld has moved to Millwall.

Kieftenbeld has given tremendous service to the Club across six seasons and departs with the gratitude of everyone at Blues.

The 30-year-old joins the Lions on a permanent basis.

A popular figure with both staff and teammates, Kieftenbeld endeared himself to all Bluenoses through his all-action approach. Covering every blade of grass, whether at the St. Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium or across the country, the Dutchman could never be faulted for his commitment to the cause.

Kieftenbeld joined Blues in July 2015 from Eredivisie side FC Groningen and made his debut in an opening day win over Reading, giving fans a taste of what was to come with a performance full of energy.

He went on to hit his maiden goals for the Club later that season, finding the net three times in January 2016. And the first of these not only secured a victory over Brentford but epitomised the midfielder’s industry as he hurtled forward to finish from close range in the game’s final moments.

Efforts in the following weeks over Derby County and Ipswich Town outlined the quality he would continually fuse to such industry, with sweetly struck volleys emphasising the level of his all-round game.

A credit to himself and the Club in the challenges that followed, Kieftenbeld’s continued contribution saw him rewarded with a contract extension until 2020, with the bond between player and Club cemented further as the option of an additional year was activated when he suffered a rupture to his anterior cruciate ligament.

It was during the subsequent recuperation period that Kieftenbeld’s inner spirit and mental strength came to the fore. Overcoming such a significant trauma was not only a testament to his character but the fitness levels he maintained.

Throughout the latest close season, Kieftenbeld prioritised supporting his colleagues and ensuring he was ready when called upon over seeking pastures new.

Kieftenbeld leaves the second city with 183 appearances and six goals to his name.

Good luck and best wishes, Dutch Mike.
