Reaction: Blues 0 Blackburn Rovers 2

I don’t feel that the team deserved to lose this game 2-0.

Head Coach Aitor Karanka felt there was an improvement from his team despite losing to Blackburn Rovers at St. Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium.

Blues suffered their second home defeat of the week in the Sky Bet Championship, but Karanka saw enough from his team to keep believing.

And the boss, although not pleased with the outcome, was able to take heart from how his players reacted to the tough night against Derby County on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media post-match, the Spaniard explained what he saw from his team and how they just need to add a clinical edge.

He told the press: “We were pushing and trying to play forward, to create chances but we didn’t create enough. When we did have one, on the subsequent transition they scored.

“It was another tough day because I don’t feel that the team deserved to lose this game 2-0.

“People always think that when I talk about individual mistakes I am talking about keepers or defenders, but there are chances that we are having and we are not scoring. It is difficult but we need to keep going.”

Blues believed they should have had two penalties in their first game of 2021 after challenges on Ivan Sanchez and Mikel San José in the box, with Karanka feeling that the game swung on such key moments.

He said: “They [Blackburn] are a really good team with the transition. They are really quick and strong. But when things are going as they are where 20 seconds we could be ahead 1-0 and 20 seconds later we are losing 1-0 it is difficult for the players.”

His team travel to Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup next weekend before facing Middlesbrough in the Championship and Karanka knows that both he and his players have it within them to bounce back.

The 47-year-old said: “It is in our hands to do better and in our hands to improve. In these moments to be a player or a coach in football you have to realise that we are privileged people, so we have to keep going and be strong.”
