The tie proved a testing one as Newcastle went two goals up inside 40 minutes. Things were made more difficult for the young Blues side when Rico Browne was dismissed three minutes after half-time, after which Newcastle twice increased their lead further.
It was the visitors who had the best of the early exchanges and Blues were fortunate to not go behind after four minutes in Nuneaton. Newcastle forward Joe White struck a sweet effort against the post, moments after Jordan James had been dispossessed on halfway.
Newcastle’s early pressure continued and they opened the scoring after 12 minutes – Charlie Wiggett heading across Archie Matthews after a fizzing cross from Remi Savage.
Blues began to grow into the game and had a goal ruled out for a foul just shy of the 20 minute mark. Towering defender Tom Fogarty was adjudged to have climbed unfairly above his defender before he bundled a Caolan Boyd-Munce corner into the net.
Despite rallying, Blues fell two behind when Matty Bondswell’s blistering pace down the left saw him square to Dylan Stephenson, who fired home from eight yards.
Steve Spooner made a change at half-time, introducing Kane Thompson-Sommers for Kyle Hurst – the former allowed to play for Blues when not needed by loan club Woking.
But Blues were dealt a cruel blow three minutes after the break when Rico Browne was shown a straight red card. Referee Tom Bishop believed him to be the last man when White broke through on-goal, a decision that left the home bench extremely frustrated in Warwickshire.
The Magpies’ pressure told late in the second-half as they scored twice late-on to inflict a second successive league defeat on Blues, who battled to the death.
